Danish Red Cross

The European Union

Our partnership with the European Union (EU) is essential for the provision of our humanitarian assistance and global development work. It contributes towards achieving our strategic priorities in line with our unique mandate. Our ambition is to develop a partnership that fosters engagement on both operational and policy issues.

Humanitarian aid (DG ECHO)

Danish Red Cross is a certified partner of the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO). This partnership supports our humanitarian actions within emergency response, anticipatory action and disaster preparedness, mental health and psychosocial support, and community-based healthcare.

Development aid (DG INTPA and DG NEAR)

We collaborate with the Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA) and the Directorate-General European Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR) on long-term development programmes to promote fundamental rights, dignity, equality and solidarity in EU neighbourhood countries and around the world.

A common nexus approach

The EU has developed a nexus approach to ensure better linkage between humanitarian assistance and development cooperation, in order to be able to anticipate, prepare for and respond to both man-made and natural crises and disasters. In recent years, the triple-nexus approach has also included peacebuilding in these efforts. However, we do not work directly with this third part of the nexus.
