The Humanitarian Innovative Finance Hub (HIFHUB) is an initiative under the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the world’s largest humanitarian network. We are committed to expanding the use of financial instruments to address humanitarian challenges. 

Through the development of a portfolio of investible projects, strengthening organisational capacity, and fostering partnerships and sector-wide support, we aim to amplify the impact of humanitarian interventions. In concrete terms we offer: 

• Portfolio building: We provide technical support to help identify and develop innovative finance components within your programmes, as well as assistance in crafting proposals. 
• Organisational readiness and awareness: This includes the Driving Innovative Finance for Impact course, targeted webinars and events, and access to the HIFHUB knowledge platform (currently under development). 
• Ecosystems and partnerships: We help identify relevant partners, leverage experiences and lessons learned from the network, and offer support in convening stakeholders and influencing the overall ecosystem. 

Our current focus is on applying a Humanitarian Blended Finance approach and instruments such as Insurance and (Endowment) Funds Formation to the following thematic areas: Preparedness and anticipatory action, WASH, Health, Climate related action.

We are hosted by the Danish Red Cross in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Kenya and Swedish Red Cross. 

Looking beyond grants is no longer optional. Traditional funding alone cannot meet the world’s growing humanitarian needs. We must constantly evolve and stay relevant to leverage new technologies and rising interest from private capital markets. We need new sources of capital and multiplier effects to expand the impact and sustainability of our interventions. 

To achieve this, we must adopt approaches and build partnerships that enhance the predictability, efficiency, and accountability of how resources are mobilised and utilised. Humanitarian Innovative Finance is complementing traditional funding to better serve crisis-affected populations. The innovation lies in applying established financial instruments – eg. insurance, bonds, debt, endowment funds, carbon credits – to humanitarian interventions. 

The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the world’s largest humanitarian network, is leading the way. Blending funding and financing is especially critical due to the diverse contexts in which we operate. We must ensure prepositioned financing for sudden-onset crises, safeguard funds for humanitarian interventions, and attract additional resources for addressing protracted crises. Humanitarian Innovative Finance is central to balancing these priorities. 

This approach demands a collective effort, requiring collaboration and support across the humanitarian, development, and financial sectors. The needs and dignity of people across the humanitarian-reconstruction-development-nexus must remain at the core of our work, driving our efforts to save lives and alleviate human suffering.
